The steps, in words
Get your paper ready.
Lay a square sheet like a diamond. If one side is coloured, keep it face down.
Start with 15 cm to practise the folds before using a large sheet.
Fold in half, downwards.
Bring the top point down to the bottom point. You get a triangle with the fold at the top.
Line the points up carefully: the whole helmet depends on this first fold.
Bring the right point down.
Fold both layers of the right point together to the bottom point. The edge lies along the imaginary vertical centre of the triangle.
The centre runs from the midpoint of the top edge to the bottom point; you do not need to make another crease.
Bring the left point down.
Fold both layers of the left point together to the same bottom point. You get a square standing on one point.
The two flaps meet in the middle.
Fold the right flap's point up.
Take the bottom point of the front right flap and fold it to the top point of the square.
Only the flap: the square behind stays still.
Fold the left flap's point up.
Now bring the bottom point of the front left flap to the same top point.
Two small triangles remain, one on each side of the centre.
Fold a horn outwards.
Fold the top point of the right triangle outwards, on a diagonal, so it sticks out past the edge.
The angle doesn't have to be exact: just make both horns look alike.
Fold the other horn.
Do the same with the left triangle, towards the other side.
Check that both horns match.
Fold the front point up.
Of the two layers at the bottom point, fold only the front one up to the lower edge of the flaps.
The back layer still points downwards.
Fold up again, over the helmet.
Fold the band up along the edge of the flaps. It becomes the visor.
The point you folded before stays hidden underneath.
Fold the last point back.
Fold the remaining bottom point backwards along the horizontal edge of the visor.
Move only the back layer. This is a mountain fold; you will open the base in the next step.
Open the helmet from below.
Pull the two walls apart at the bottom opening, with your thumbs inside, and open it just enough to give it volume, keeping the folds in place. The two horns stand up at the sides.
Open it slowly and rest the visor on the table to see how it looks.
Your helmet is ready.
The drawing shows the helmet open, seen from the front: the round crown with the two horns on top and the white visor below.
If a fold comes undone, press it again with your fingernail.
