A traditional model with just a few folds: a triangle, two crossed flaps and a cup you can open.

  1. Get your paper ready.

Lay a square sheet like a diamond, with one point towards you. If one side is coloured, keep it face down.

A 15 cm square is comfortable. A bigger sheet makes a bigger cup.

  2. Fold in half, upwards.

Bring the bottom point up to the top point and crease the horizontal fold well.

Keep the triangle with its long edge at the bottom and its point at the top.

  3. Bring the right point to the left edge.

Fold both layers of the right point together to the left edge. Adjust its position so the flap's top edge is horizontal.

Check that the flap's top edge runs parallel to the base.

  4. Bring the left point to the right edge.

Fold both layers of the left point together to the right end of the horizontal edge you just made.

The two flaps cross and form the body of the cup.

  5. Fold the front layer down.

Fold only the point of the front layer down along the horizontal edge of the flaps.

The back layer still points upwards.

  6. Fold the other layer back.

Fold the point still at the top backwards along the same horizontal edge.

This point ends up behind the cup: it is a mountain fold.

  7. Open the mouth of the cup.

Gently separate the two walls at the top opening and push from inside with your fingers until the mouth is round.

Open it slowly: if you force the paper, it creases.

  8. Your cup is ready.

The drawing shows the cup open, seen from the side and a little from above: the round mouth at the top, the pale inside and the body narrowing towards the base.

Stand the cup on the table and smooth the rim of the mouth with your fingers.
